Lines and EEG

Lines and EEG is an installation by Joty Dhaliwal and Vanessa Li, mapping readings from an EEG to a projection mapped generative line design.

EEG measures the synchronized activity of voltage change across large groups of neurons. While the measurement tool is not fine enough to measure individual neurons and the reactionary internal voltage spikes that are caused by stimuli, the EEG can measure voltage changes on the exterior parts of the neuron and allow us to guess how a neuron might react (voltage spike or not). EEG readings observe a macro oscillation that we then interpret through frequency and label brainwave.

This installation explores the electrical aspect of brain activity by visually representing these electrical movements to the viewer. While the aesthetic presentation does not lead to accurate readings, we hope viewers find our fascination with wavelengths, electricity and the brain interesting to contemplate.
